LAN TOPOLOGIES - NETWORKS AND LINE CONNECTIONS

1. MESH

Can be used in high traffic conditions by providing alternative routing between stations.

Comparatively expensive to set up due to the amount of cable required and the complexity of stations to provide intelligent routing.where cost is of secondary importance. Most WANs - Wide Area Networks, i.e. PTN - Public Telephone Network and PDN - Public Data Network.use the mesh topology.

2. STAR

The central node usually employs switching techniques to interconnect stations. Circuit, message (Store and Forward) or packet switching may be provided.

Broadcast facilities to more than one station are not normally provided. The main advantages are central network control and simple attachment hardware at each station.

The central node most often controls shared information on disk drives and/or printer servers.

If the central node "goes down" then the whole system is out of action. Low speed transmission is normally used.
